Sport and Coaching in Africa
Sport is a physical activity that tests our athletic abilities. It a kind of physical exercise in which we compete with the opponent/s solely for the purpose of entertainment and sound health.. Basketball, football, cricket, volleyball, hockey are some of the most well known sports. Sports have many physical and psychological advantages on the participants as well as the viewers. They result in a better physical stamina and improved reflexes along with other advantages. But the most important aspect of sport that we lack in this part of the world is the role of a coach/manager . A piece in the sporting world with which Africans generally lack is the effect coaches bring into the sport world. Most coaches lack proper knowledge of the game they are venturing into; some even go online to learn one or two things to which is bad but the proper implementation might go wrong.
The sporting desk on our budgets schemes are nothing to write home about and it gives the young folks the disadvantage at taking their shots at the coaching job spot. Let's talk about coaching for a moment.
A coach is a person involved in the direction, instruction and training of the operations of a sports team or of individual sportspeople. As the role of a coach imply they are the major determinant of how a talented athletic performs,it is then the case that if the coach isn't properly groomed through the ranks he can't really impact on the crop of athletic he/she has or as the case maybe his/her role might not fully bring out the full quality of the athletics as his/her own qualities are not well polished as well. Bill Self, Tom Izzo (basketball coaches) Johan Cruyff, Sir Alex Ferguson(football) and a host of other managers/coaches wouldn't have been able to build styles to the games with which they represented if they never went through proper grooming. The major problem posed here is we have talents who are ready to take the challenge on , but there isn't scholarship, training, scouts , governmental fundings and programs for this set of people who have been said to be important to the sporting world in Africa. For example in Jamaica they have track and field coaches who have coaching badges in that particular field in most of their high schools and primary grades , you will reason along with me now, that they have a reason to come out as the best in that field of sport. It only comes natural when coaches are groomed properly for athletics to come out flying. In a short note the essence of this article is to awaken the leaders and big business owners who are always interested in sport and those who are not to look into taking the roles of bringing coaches up as they are as important as the game. Lean a hand in bringing good Coaches out of Africa , who can be presented to the whole world, and we will see African sporting life flourish like never before.it brings tears to my chin anytime Afcon, Africa Commonwealth games comes up , most of the coaches representing Africa are from the western world. Sounds more like Neo-Colonialism to me , pardon my line of thought but am allowed to make my own assumptions. Let's Get Africa working.
